Description of Changes Business Entity Type Impacted
Child and Adolescent Uniform Assessments - Mental Health An improvement has been made to CMBHS to ensure that clinicians administering the CANS to a 6 year old child have the opportunity to choose between the CANS (3-5) and the CANS (6-17) consistent with DSHS mental health policy. The information below relates to online functionality. MH providers who exchange data with CMBHS through a batch process must transmit the correct CANS type to DSHS according to these same rules.

NO CHANGE The functionality below assists the CMBHS online user to select the most appropriate type of CANS when a choice is available based on the child’s age.

1. CMBHS automatically displays the following popup message to indicate to the clinician/user that they have a choice between using the CANS (3-5) and the CANS (6-17) because of the child’s age. If this message does not display, the child does not meet the criteria for both types of CANS.

2. After the user closes the information box above, the following page displays. Click in one of the boxes to indicate the CANS type you are selecting and CMBHS will display that CANS type in the Assessment.

3. As long as the child is 6 years old, the same message will display at the top of the CANS. It does not display after it is saved in Ready for Review document status. This gives the user the opportunity to change the CANS type even after they have started to document CANS scores.

NOTE: If you change the CANS type after documenting some CANS scores, all those scores will be lost. CMBHS will not save any scores when you change from one type of CANS to another. All the scores must be re-entered into the new CANS document.

RULE CHANGE (Highlighted in yellow )

If a 3 to 5 year old child is being assessed:

• The Initial Assessment CANS type will be a CANS (3-5). The pop-up message to indicate a choice between CANS types will not display.

• As long as the child is less than 6 years old within that episode of care, all Update Assessments will use the CANS (3-5). The pop-up message to indicate a choice between CANS types will not display.

• The Discharge Assessment CANS type will always be the CANS (3-5).

• If the child turns 6 within that same episode of care, the pop-up message will display indicating a choice between using the CANS (3-5) or changing to the CANS (6-17). The clinician will be given the opportunity to choose at every Update Assessment.

If a 6 year old is being assessed:

• For the Initial Assessment, the clinician will be given the choice of administering the CANS (3-5) or the CANS (6-17). The pop-up message indicating a choice between CANS types will display.

As long as the child is less than 7 years old within that same episode of care, the clinician will be given the choice of using the CANS (3-5) or the CANS (6-17) for Update Assessments.

• The Discharge Assessment CANS type will be of the same CANS type as completed in the Assessment immediately before it. NOTE: When you open the Assessment and select Discharge as the Assessment Type, the buttons allowing a choice between the CANS 3-5 or 6-17 will display. Regardless of your choice however, the page will refresh and display the CANS type that matches the last CANS type completed. This behavior will be changed at some point in the future to not require a choice between CANS types and to display the appropriate CANS

• If the child turns 7 years old within that same episode of care, the pop-up message will no longer display when the clinician attempts to do an Update Assessment. The clinician must use the CANS (6-17).

If a child is 7 year old:

• The Initial and Update Assessment CANS type will always be the CANS (6-17). The pop-up message indicating a choice between CANS types will not display.

• The Discharge Assessment CANS type will always be the CANS (6-17). The pop-up message indicating a choice between CANS types will not display.
